HAYES
HAYES STREET
(east side)
nos. 21 and 23

GV
II

Pair of-cottages. 1886 by George Devey for Everard Alexander Hambro, perhaps completed
later by James Williams. Brick with some diapering, roughcast and timber cladding to the first
floor; tile hanging to gable and a tiled roof. Assymmetrical composition, No. 21 with projecting
and jettied bay, and jettied first floor in Wealden style; No. 23 with a massive external stack
abutting the gable, and a larger projecting bay to rear. All windows leaded casements, mostly
of three lights, with one four-light and one Venetian window to No. 21 and a canted first-floor
oriel to No. 23. Central door to No. 21, entrance to No. 23 at side. No. 21 has first-floor
half-timbering with dentiled cornice, both houses have network bargeboards. Included as an
example of Devey's work at its very best.
