C18, C20 alterations. Colourwashed, plastered cob and stone ; wheat reed thatched
roof with a plain ridge, gabled at right end, half-hipped at left end, rear wing
hipped at end ; projecting right end stack with brick shaft, left end stack with
brick shaft.
Plan: L plan. The main range is single depth, 2 rooms wide, the left hand room with
a considerably lower floor level, both rooms heated from the end stacks. A single-
storey lean-to at right angles to the left hand end at the rear has been raised to a
2-storey wing in the late C20. Single-storey slate-roofed lean-to, triangular on
plan, in the angle between the rear wing and the main range. The plan may derive
from 2 singe cell adjoining cottages, the left hand later in date than the right end.
C19 stair against front wall of right hand room, direct entry into right hand room.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front with a C20 thatched porch to right of centre
with a C20 half-glazed front door. Eaves thatch eyebrowed over the first floor
windows whch are particularly attractive 2-light casements each light with 1 vertical
glazing bar and lapped glass. Ground floor window right is an C18 3-light casement
with square leaded panes. Ground floor window left is a 4-light casement, 3 panes
per light; ground floor window one from left is a 2-light C20 casement with square
panes; small square window to the left of the porch.
Interior Both fireplaces are in the outer rear corners of the 2 rooms and have been
reconstructed in the C20. The right hand room has 1 cross and 1 axial beam with step
stops, the left hand room has a plain chamfered cross beam.
Roof trusses over the left hand end only inspected : pegged collar rafter, probably
C18.
A very unspoiled exterior and prominment site make this a particularly important
house in Bickleigh, group value with Lilac Cottage (q.v.) and Boundys' (q.v.). The
former village green is the garden of this house.
