Salthill Lodge
II
Lodge to Salthill House (q.v. Funtington CP). Probably 1804 for John Newland as
Salthill House; added to and altered 1977; further addition 1988-89. Knapped flint
with flint galleting and yellow brick dressings. Welsh slate roof. One storey. Octagonal
on plan, the front rear and left and right sides longer than the angles; 1977 rear
extension in same style and 1988 extension to right side of the earlier extension
not of special interest. Brick quoins at angles and to 4-centred arched openings.
Entrance front has central board door of cusped panels flanked by windows; 2 windows
to left and right sides, one to the angles, all windows having replacement C20 case-
ment windows and overlights with Y-shaped glazing bars. Window in rear, left, angled
side was formerly a door. Rear masked by extension. Central brick stack with
2 flues. Interior: former partitioning removed; the central chimney has 2 fireplaces.
John Newland is, first mentioned as owner of Salthill House in 1804 (Land Tax Assess-
ments of New Fishbourne). There is a second, formerly matching, lodge on Salthill
Road (q.v. Butterfly Lodge, Funtington parish).
