Fire station incorporating house. 1907. By Hunter, Borough Engineer. Pressed
red brick with terracotta dressings, Welsh slate roof. 2-storey, 2-bay house
on left of taller 2-storey, 5-bay engine house having 4-storey tower to rear.
Queen Anne Revival style. House: central 6-panel door and overlight under tiled
canopy on brackets which extends to right to cover a rectangular 2-light bay
window having ovolo moulded surrounds with keystones. Bay 1 has 2-storey bay
window in same style under dormer with hipped roof and finial. 1st floor window
on right is flush but has matching dormer roof: terracotta plaque above door.
Engine House: folding, part-glazed doors beneath segmental arches set on square
concrete piers; the arches have raised, facetted voussoirs and linked hoodmould;
narrow doorway to far left has decorative arch and cornice. 1st floor: moulded
sills, ovolo-moulded surrounds and raised keystones to 5-light windows; those of
bays 2 and 4 have stepped round-headed lights which rise above eaves beneath
shaped gables set on corbels and capped by pediments. To far left is a semi-
octagonal oriel window which rises as an embattled turret. Half-hipped roof with
louvered gablets and finials. Rear: tower has side windows and modillioned cornice
beneath parapet with rounded corner turrets; attached iron framework with 4 platforms
linked by ladders. Well preserved and stylish example of its type.
