9/10003 Shrewley Tunnel south portal

GV II

Tunnel portal. Late C18 with later alterations. Probably designed by
Wm Felkin and Philip Henry Witton for Warwick and Birmingham Canal Co.
Brick and stone. Single semi-circular arch with brick band and outer
stone band with keystone and stone imposts. Above, a stone band
followed by a parapet with a line of Staffordshire blue bricks crowned
by a solid iron kerb. To left, a trailing edge wing wall of
alternating bands of brick and stone, consolidating embankment taking
towpath upwards to form horse-path which crosses fields to join
towpath tunnel attached to Shrewley Tunnel north portal q.v.
