6/284 Rood Ashton Lodge
GV II
Lodges with carriage house and stables. Probably c1830, for Long family of Rood
Ashton House (qv). Stuccoed brick, Welsh slate and corrugated asbestos roofs,
terracotta octagonal stacks. Gothic-style courtyard plan. North front has central
elliptically-arched entrance to courtyard with double panelled doors, Long family
crest on keystone, oriel over with pointed lights, battlemented parapet with
octagonal corner pilasters, 2 bays flanking archway have 2-light mullioned
casements with pointed lights to ground and first floors. Single-storey flanking
bays have 4-panelled door to each lodge and mullioned casement with 3 pointed
lights, all with hoodmoulds. Low side bays each have 2-light mullioned casements.
Courtyard has elliptically-headed double carriage doors on south side, panelled
stable doors and mullioned casements with pointed lights to west and east sides.
Battlemented parapets concealing roofs. Interior of stables partly gutted, but retain
some good quality timber and cast-iron partitions between stalls, slate panels with
tethering rings, cobbled floors. An elaborately designed stable and lodge block, built
to match the main house, possibly by Thomas Hopper.
