Railway station and stationmaster's house. 1841, by Benjamin Green for the Great
North of England Railway. Plum-coloured stock brick with sandstone dressings and
Welsh slate roof. H-shaped plan, Jacobethan style. West (entrance) elevation is
symmetrical with the one-storey and attic house projecting forward on the left
with a further room projecting forward again and gabled at right angles. Single
light casement windows to either face, drip moulds over. Centre section has four
centred porch with corbelled parapet, original plank door. This is flanked by two
light stone mullioned windows with drip moulds, corbel table above. Righthand
gable with two light windows below, single above, as before. Gables with moulded
coping, double kneelers, finials, some of these details damaged. Two stacks at
junction of roofs, one rebuilt, one partly dismantled. South elevation with two,
two-light windows with continuous drip. East (track) elevation is asymmetrical.
Gables with stepped three-light, mullioned windows with drips, single light above.
These flank recessed centre with three-bay verandah carried on quatrefoil section,
cast-iron columns. Wooden arcade with decorated spandrels and pendants, slate
roof, corbel table above. Above this is a small gable with a plain roundel pre-
sumably intended for a clock. Interior almost intact to both public rooms and
house. Booking office fittings, most of the joinery and five original fireplaces,
four with Gothic surrounds. This is the oldest survivor of Benjamin Green's
stations and the only survivor of the Great Northern Railway wayside stations.
