Oakham Railway Station

Railway station. 1847. Red brick with buff brick dressings and Welsh slate roof
with brick ridge and end stacks. Italianate style with recessed centre between
cross-wings and outer single-storey wings. 2-storey 5-window range of three
2-light casements to centre and single glazing-bar sashes with arched heads and
margin lights to wings. These last in recessed giant arches with impost band. On
ground floor, a loggia-like porch to centre supported on 4 square whitewashed
piers. Doorways and two 12-pane sashes within. Cross-wings also have 12-pane
sashes within the giant arches. Wide projecting eaves supported on pairs of
shaped brackets. Single-storey block to left with further doorways and glazing-
bar sashes. Similar block to right also has glazing bar sashes, those three
immediately to right of main range with arched heads and margin lights. On the
platform side a cast-iron canopy with decorative ironwork, further 12-pane and
other glazing-bar sashes to ground floor and three 2-light casements to 1st
floor. Part-glazed panelled doors with overlights. Forms a group with Oakham
level Crossing Signal Box (qv) and Oakham Level Crossing Footbridge (qv).
