Forge Cottage and Rafters

GV
II

Pair of cottages. Probably later C18; altered. Handmade brown brick and
some sandstone, stone slate roof. Rectangular plan, each cottage of 2 units
with continuous rear outshut. Two storeys, both almost symmetrical; Forge
Cottage (on the left) has joints in the brickwork indicating the position of
the former doorway, Rafters (on the right) has a similarly blocked doorway
with a stone lintel; both have 2 windows on each floor, all square, with
stone sills, and those at ground floor with stone lintels; Forge Cottage has
a 4-pane sash and a 2-light horizontal sliding sash at ground floor, but all
other windows have altered glazing (with glazing bars). Chimneys at left
gable and on ridge at junction. Left gable wall of Forge Cottage has an
inserted doorway with small glazed porch and a 4-pane sash towards the rear,
and stone quoins to the rear corner, the rear wall being of coursed squared
sandstone. (Attached at right-hand end of Rafters is an altered former wagon
house of stone, and at the rear a modern addition, neither of which is
included in the item).
