Large house, including gardener's cottage and outbuildings. 1913-14
by W Curtis Greene in Neo-Georgian style. Built of red brick in
flemish bond with tiled roof and 3 tall brick chimneystacks. Entrance
front has recessed centre of 2 storeys and attic. 1 window flanked by
L shaped 2 storey wings of 3 windows each. Very tall central clustered
brick chimneystack and cambered casement to attic. First floor has 12-
pane sash. Ground floor has central doorcase with pediment and
shouldered architrave. 20 panelled door. Projecting L wings have 12-
pane sashes with horns to first floor, 16-pane sashes to ground floor
(the inner windows with round-headed blanks above and shutters). End
bays project still further and have 5-light bays on both floors. Rear
elevation has central projecting section of 2 storeys and attics. 5
windows flanked by recessed wings of 1 bay each. Centre has steeply
pitched roof with 2 hipped dormers with casements. 5 16-pane sashes
with horns and shutters. Ground floor windows and central French
windows with C20 panes have round-headed blanks above. Flanking wing
each has French windows and projecting end bays with hips and 5-light
bays on both floors. Attached to the north east is a service courtyard
including garage and gardener's cottage. Garage is of brick, one
storey with 2 round-headed windows and arch. Rystwood Cottage has
ground floor of brick in stretcher bond, first floor is tile hung.
Hipped tiled roof with central brick chimneystack. Interior contains
original features including well staircase of Chinese Chippendale
style and stone fireplace with bolection moulding. [See Sir Lawrence
