No 3 (Twyn Cottage) and No 5 (Twyn House)

Pair of houses, at one time a workhouse. C18, originally of pebbles with brick quoins but in mid C19 rendered over with incised lines to imitate masonry when bay windows were also added. Hipped tiled roof with two cement rendered chimney stacks. Two storeys and attics. Five windows. Three flat-roofed dormers. Three mid C19 canted bays through both floors. No 3 has an intact two storey bay with verticals only and horns and left side casement and C19 gabled porch and plank door. No. 5 has its two bays fitted with C20 alumiwium windows and central pointed oriel also with aluminium window. Open pedimented porch with two centred arch and four-panelled door, the top two panels glazed. Plinth. Rear elevation retains some sliding sashes. Interior of No. 5 retains C18 internal framing of thin scantling with painted brick infilling. Staircase with stick balusters and column newel post.
This building is on the site of the medieval leprosy hospital of St John's. Residents of the workhouse were moved to Eastbourne c.1810 and the building reverted to domestic use..
