GV II
Market cross on village green. 1679, restored various dates in C18
and C19. Tuscan column on stepped base, plinth square with fielded
panels and pilasters. Dates of repairs and restorations inscribed
around top of column. Block sundial on top with wrought iron
'hands' and ball finial with iron cross and crown. Also known as a
staple and it is suggested that the village may take its name from
this, although the church's former spire or steeple is more likely
to have distinguished Steeple Ashton from West Ashton.
Scheduled Ancient Monument, Wiltshire, No 251.
