Description

SK 12 NW

NEWBOROUGH
HOLLY BUSH ROAD
Farm out building to the north-west of Newborough Hall farm house.

II

Farm outbuilding. C17, or earlier, with C18, C19 and C20 additions and alterations.
Timber framed, with much of the lower framework subsequently and intermittently
replaced by red brick. Staffordshire blue tile roof North-west elevation. Single story with
over lofts, five bays, formerly of close studded timber-framed construction, three panels
high, with principal posts defining the bays, and with intermediate posts at half bay
intervals. The wall framing now survives only in the upper part of the north-west side
wall, with plastered brick in-fil, and with angle bracing between posts and wall plate. The
central bay is narrower than the flanking bays, and has a segmentally arched doorway
which interrupts the line of the lower rail. To the south-west, two inserted windows
below surviving fragments of the original lower frame rail, one a 2 light casement, each
light of 6 panes, the other a 9 paned fixed light. Between, a blocked inserted opening.
Half bay to south-west end contains near-complete framing. South west gable, with
jowelled corner points, principal rafters and collar beams; empty pegholes indicating
position of removed frame members. Low, hipped roof lean - to houses C19 sawmill
machinery, formerly water-powered. Interior. Near-complete roof structure, comprising
4 queen strut trusses supporting trenched double purlins, and with some longitudinal
straight bracing to the upper purlins. Transverse bracing from jowel posts to tie beam
soffits. Central two trusses formerly infilled, with additional vertical struts to the centre
of the truss. The building has to the south-east of Newborough Hall moated site,
millpound, fishpond and connecting channels; a scheduled monument (National
Monument number 13505) and the water supply to the sawmill machinery was drawn
from the moat and pond network now within the monument area.
