Description

WILLISHAM HOLLY ROAD
TM 05 SE
2/163 Long Meadow
-
- II

An early C16 3-cell open-hall house with alterations of early C17 and mid C20.
2 storeys. Timber-framed and plastered. Thatched roof with axial C17 chimney
of red brick having sawtooth-pattern shaft; a C20 eyebrow casement dormer.
C20 casements with leaded glazing. C20 boarded entrance aoor; the large
suspended flat canopy has an arcaded soffit. An unusually complete example of
an open hall house, with framing fully exposed. The 2-bay hall is smoke-
blackened. It has an open truss with a cambered tie-beam and octagonal crown-
post with 2-way plank braces. Large blocked diamond-mullioned windows in the
hall; several others also survive from C16 and C17 phases. Close-studwork
with shortened arch-type wind-bracing. In C17, the parlour was enlarged and a
chimney built between it and the hall, with arched fireplaces to parlour and
chamber above, ana a lintelled opening in the hall. Upper floor inserted into
hall and into previously unfloored service-cell. The parlour chamber has C17
open truss of arch-braced collar-beam type. To right a lower range,(possibly
kitchen) was added in C17/C18 and largely rebuilt in C20.
