Large house. Early C19. Plastered rubble; rubble stacks with C19 brick chimney
shafts; slate roof with lead ridges. Double depth plan house facing park to east
with 2 rooms either side of central entrance hall and staircase. End stacks with 2
shafts each side. Single storey ancillary wing along left (south) side. Main block
is 3 storeys. Some neo-classical motifs. Symmetrical 5-window front to main block.
All are 12-pane sashes and those on ground floor have flat recessed stucco
architraves. Plain flanking pilasters and stucco incised as ashlar. Central
original 6-panel front door (now part-glazed) has overlight with diagonal glazing
bars, panelled reveals and flat-roofed Tuscan porch with timber posts and moulded
entablature. Deep eaves on pairs of shaped brackets and original cast iron gutter
with lion-mask joints. Roof is hipped each end and flanked by brick chimney shafts.
Ancillary wing in same style with single large 12-pane sash front with flat-recessed
architrave. Stucco incised as ashlar. Low pediment over with recessed tympanum and
flanking antifixa. At left (south) end pilaster rises as square pier with plain cap
to carry a classical vase. Left end of ancillary block includes C19 6-panel door,
overlight with glazing bars and flat-hood on shaped timber brackets. Not completely
regular rear elevation comprises a variety of sashes with glazing bars including 25,
15, 16 and 12-pane sashes.
Interior includes much original joinery and plasterwork. Stockleigh Court was home
of Bellew family from C16 to C20.
