Description

POUGHILL
SS 80 NE
7/199
- Newland Farmhouse
- II

Farmhouse. Early-mid C17, partly rebuilt and possibly extended in early C18.
Plastered cob on rubble footings; cob and rubble stacks topped with C20 brick;
thatch roof. 3-room with cross-passage plan facing south with inner room at left
(west) end. Newel stair turret projecting to rear of passage. Hall has projecting
rear lateral stack and both inner room and lower end parlour have projecting end
stacks (the former now disused). Outshots to rear. 2 storeys. Irregular 5 window
front of various late C19 and C20 casements with glazing bars. Late C19 9-panel
door to passage right of centre with C20 thatched roof porch on plain posts. Roof
is half-hipped to left and gable-ended to right. The eaves drop to a slightly
lower level over passage and service end (to right). Thatch eyebrows over 2 first
floor windows this end.
Interior: as far as can be seen early-mid C17 fabric survives only in passage,
service end parlour and stair turret. Hall and inner room apparently result of
early C18 refurbishment. Inner room possibly added at this time. Lower end
parlour has double ovolo-moulded cross and half-beams with keeled scroll stops the
oak lintel of the rubble fireplace is soffit-chamfered with scroll stops. The
newel stair turret includes a tiny iron casement with leaded glass and shaped back-
plate now set back to front in a plain oak frame. Its position shows that outshot
to rear of hall is C18 or C19. At top of stairs there is a small C17 doorframe
with chamfered and scroll-stopped surround and containing a contemporary plank door
with crude wrought-iron strap hinges. It leads to loft over service end outshot
proving that this outshot is C17. C17 roof over service end chamber is 2 bays with
an A-frame truss with pegged lap-jointed collar. Cob crosswall between passage and
hall. Hall has early C18 ceiling beams; square-section and hidden by suspended
ceiling. Large hall fireplace is cob built with rubble sides and plain oak lintel
resting on oak pads. Cob crosswall between hall and inner room rises only to first
floor level. Early C18 roof over this section is slightly higher than C17 roof.
The A-frame trusses have pegged lap-jointed collars and at the apex the tenon is
carried through to seat the ridge.
