Pair of house. Part of planned estate built between 1843 and 1850
by John Snell. Italianate style. Built of stock brick with hipped
slate roof and central brick chimneystack. 2 storeys and
basement; 4 windows. Cornice and 4 giant pilasters. No 42 has
original marginal glazing, the 1st floor windows having moulded
architraves and brackets below cills, the ground floor window
cornice and brackets, cast iron anthemion-motif flower guards and
brackets below cills. No 40 has C20 casements in original
openings. Ionic porticoes to sides with flight of stone steps to
street with iron balustrades. Rusticated basement with cambered
headed window. No 40 has C20 flat roofed dormer. Identical in
type to Nos 44 and 46.
