House. c1820, enlarged and altered by Cuthbert Brodrick c1850. Light grey
brick with stone dressings, slate roofs. Originally central direct entry,
side entry probably made in c1850. 2 storeys, 3 bays with recessed 2 storey
(originally one-storey) l-bay wings. Moulded plinth, corner and
intermediate pilasters. Main block has central French window with glazing
bars under flat gauged brick arch with decorated band over: canted bays
rising through full height of house to right and left have sashes with
glazing bars throughout, all under flat gauged brick arches. 12-pane sash
under flat gauged brick arch over door. Wings have sashes with margin
lights under flat gauged brick arches to ground floor, decorated first floor
band, and sashes with glazing bars under flat gauged brick arches to first
floor. Deep moulded eaves cornice, coped parapet. End stacks heightened in
red brick. Entrance front: 2 storeys, 4 bays. Moulded plinth, end and
intermediate pilasters. 2nd bay has Ionic porch with columns in antis
supporting full architrave under ramped parapet with gablets to corner-
pieces. C20 glazed double-leaf door under oblong fanlight flanked by 2-pane
sidelights. Bays 1 and 3 have round-headed shouldered niches and panels
sunk between consoles which support a moulded shelf. Bay 4 has a carved
panel with bay-wreath and torch. Decorated first-floor band. First floor:
bays 1-3 have panels with satyr masks and festoons, bay 4 a bay wreath.
Interior: cut-string staircase with enriched cast iron balusters and
moulded handrail. The hall also contains a number of C18 fittings from
Winestead Hall (now demolished).
