Union workhouse, later hospital now (1989) disused. 1836 (dated) built by
Geo. Wick & Son of Witney. Cotswold stone ashlar and rubble, Welsh slate
roofs. Standard cruciform plan with crosswings to end of each wing and a
central tower; administration block and guardian's house fronting road, wards
behind. Mostly two storeys but three in part. Roofs hipped over each
section.
Street elevation. Plain classical treatment. Ten bays, 3:4:3, the centre set
slightly forward and with a pediment over. First floor band. Central 6 panel
door with bracketed hood. All windows are 12 pane sashes. Eaves gutter on
paired brackets, low pitched roof with two stone stacks.
Rear wings of squared coursed rubble. Some original casement windows in
elliptical heads, particularly on spine but many replacements including some
steel ones in altered openings. Various modern additions and fire escapes etc
not of special interest.
Interiors originally very plain now partly altered. A small Union Workhouse
retaining all its buildings and with only superficial alteration.
