Large house now subdivided. Built for Sir Samuel Cunard in 1907 when it was
known as Orchards. Architect unknown but rather in the style of J D Coleridge,
a pupil of Lutyens. Built in a Jacobean style which is a fairly close copy of
Sackville College in East Grinstead. Orchard House and Lindens are a subdivision
of the main house, Bowes Wood is the L-wing which originally formed the servants
quarters, south elevation is of sandstone, north elevation and Bowes Wood timber
framed with plaster infill. Tiled roof with ribbed brick chimneystacks. 2
storeys and attics.South front has 10 stone mullioned windows. Roof has central
square shingled turret with octagonal belvedere. 2 gabled dormers. Central and
side projecting 2 storey gables with coping and kneelers (the original finials
having been removed). Central gable has sundial, 5 light stone mullioned window
and round headed doorcase with keystone and impost blocks, pilasters, sidelights
and oak panelled doors. Side wings have lozenge decoration to gables, 5 light
mullioned windows to 1st floor and 6 light mullioned windows to ground floor.
East gable is timber framed. West gable is of stone retaining finials and with
stone doorcase. North front has 2 projecting stone gables and the ground floor
is of stone with close studded timber framing above. 2 gabled dormers. Gable
to centre of house has 6 light mullioned and transomed windows with cambered
heads. Round headed doorway with keystone and impost blocks. Bowes Wood is
timber-framed on sandstone plinth. Old tiled roof with 3 clustered brick stacks
and 5 gabled dormers. 5 mullioned casements with oak surrounds and iron cames.
Gabled extension and porch to left hand side. Attached to the west end of
Lindens is a gardeners hut which is timber framed to south with casement
windows and oak door with decorative hinges and weatherboarded behind)Lindens
has ground floor room formerly the Library or Study which has a reused chamfered
spine beam and some reused chamfered floor jambs with run out stops - The room
is lined in probably genuine early C17 oak plank and muntin panelling. Fireplace
recess with early C17 style 4 -centred stone fireplace with high stops and 1907
wooden settle ends. Former dining room has plaster panelling, 1907 roll moulded
cornice and reused timbers in ceiling are at least probably from a barn. Corner
fireplace appears to be C18; wooden frieze with central tree flanked by ruins
with a shepherd and his dog in C18 costume to left and escaping sheep to right
with ewers in the corners. Corridor has reused chamfered beams. 1st floor
principal bedroom has fireplace recess with brick chimney and reused bressumer
with Arts and Crafts style settle ends below. Another bedroom has an early C20
corner fireplace with console brackets and egg and dart moulding. Attic has fine
plank doors in early C17 style interior of Orchard House not seen but according
to sales particulars has original drawing room and morning room with panelling
and fireplaces in similar style. Bowes Wood has a series of plank doors in C17
style.
