Description

HILDENBOROUGH NIZELS LANE (west side)
TQ 55 SW
1/163 Gate piers, gates, garden
- walls and pool north west and
west of Nizels House
GV II

Gate piers, gates, garden walls and pool. Early C20, the design part of the
forecourt west of Nizels House and probably contemporary with the Edwardian
remodelling of it. Flemish bond brick with stone coping, the gates wrough
iron, the pool with a stone margin.

Plan: A formal garden at the west end of the forecourt to the entrance front
of the house, the forecourt enclosed by entrance gates and walls on the north
west side. A gateway in the south wall of the formal garden leads to the more
open garden land to the south. The entrance gateway to the forecourt has
square section piers with finials in the form of vases of fruit and a pair of
fine wrought iron gates ramped up to the centre. To the right and left of the
piers the coped brick walls curve down and up with semi-circles of wrought
iron in the curve. The garden wall is low to the east, making the garden
visible from the house, with short square-section piers with ball finials. To
the east, north and south the walls are taller with square section piers at
the corners; the west wall rising in the centre. The south wall has a wrought
iron gate into the garden beyond. The pool has nowy ends.

Important to the setting of the house.
