The nucleus of 1771, the first cotton mill set up by Richard Arkwright,
who here first applied the "Spinning Jenny" to the manufacture of cotton
goods. The buildings are semi-fortified, designed to resist rioters, and
surrounded by high walls with a convex gatehouse. The main block of ashlar,
3-storeyed and with plain sash windows. Including a 3-storeyed stone rubble
block with 6 2-light mullioned windows and a 2-storeyed block with 5 sash
windows and channelled lintels, both on left-hand side; cast iron aqueduct
dated 1821 spans roadway. Now a paint factory.
