Pair of houses. c1840. White brick, red brick returns; slate
roofs. 2 storeys on basement; 4-window range with entrances in
rebated one-bay wings to side.
Facade divided by central pilaster; end pilasters right and
left. 6/6 unhorned sashes under gauged skewback arches. C20
area railings. Hipped roof with central common stack. Entrance
bays to side have steps up to 4-panelled doors under plain
fanlights set in stuccoed surrounds. Recessed further back is
a 6/6 unhorned sash to each house at first floor, with gauged
skewback arches. These side bays also under hipped roofs.
Attached to right and left former carriage houses, that to
No.158 with original double timber doors and pedestrian door
leading to passage to rear. Carriage houses under gabled
roofs.
Rear elevation presents a 6-window range under double shallow
hipped roofs: 6/6 unhorned sashes under segmental arches.
Service wing to rear of No.156 remains, corresponding wing to
158 demolished.
INTERIOR. No.158: stick-baluster staircase, the balusters to
all but basement flight replaced in C20 with turned balusters.
4-panelled doors; plain plaster cornices and ceiling roses; 2
plain marble fireplaces.
