Corner site with Charing Cross Road. House, now public house with accommodation
above. Late C17/early C18 with later alterations. Rendered brick, tiled
mansard roof. 3 1/2 storeys. Ground floor: 3 bays, with entrance to Charing
Cross Road and pair of small paned sashes. Old Compton Street elevation has
pair of small paned sashes and blank recessed panel. Upper floors: 2 bays to
Old Compton Street, one to Charing Cross Road. First floor recessed sashes,
upper floor casements beneath fixed light, rendered Cills. Window forms suggest
early, tall proportions retained. Single full dormer to each front. Party wall
stacks. Interior: Above ground floor retains original plan form. Open-well
staircase with moulded closed string, some original turned balusters, moulded
rail, newels comprising column with square base and knob, finials removed.
Plain panelling with deeply moulded box cornicing. Rare survival of early
house representing the earliest phase of Soho's development (q.v.) Nos 4, 5, 6
Old Compton Street and 101 Charing Cross Road.
