Former station hotel, retaining wall and approach ramp.
Approach ramp 1848. Hotel 1861 and late C19, restored c1990.
By ME Hadfield. Hotel, brick with painted ashlar dressings and
hipped artificial slate roofs with 7 coped rusticated ridge
stacks. Retaining wall and approach ramp, coursed squared
stone with ashlar dressings.
EXTERIOR: plinth, first floor band, third floor sillband,
modillion eaves. 4 storeys; 9 window range. Windows are mainly
plain sashes, those to the ground floor segment-headed, those
to the third floor smaller.
Projecting central entrance bay has windows with moulded
surrounds and is topped with a gable containing a segmental
pediment and roundel. First floor window has a segmental
pediment and keystone. Round-arched doorway has small
triangular pediment.
On either side, recessed bays with 2 windows on each floor,
the ground floor ones with keystones.
Beyond, on either side, hipped projecting bays with 2 windows
on each floor, the first floor ones with segmental pediments.
All these windows have projecting surrounds. Right bay has on
the ground floor a canted bay window with 3 sashes.
Left return has a recessed centre, 3 storeys plus basement and
attics; 5 window range. Rusticated basement. Right wing has 3
windows on each floor, all with projecting surrounds. Left
wing, 4 storeys, has a single central window on the upper
floors, and 3 on the ground floor.
INTERIOR has entrance hall flanked by reception desk and
lounge, with enriched cornices and arches and panelled
ceiling. Lobby has plaster wall panels divided by Ionic
pilasters and coved reticulated ceiling with boss. Main lounge
has similar panelling and pilasters, heavily enriched
modillion cornice, and reticulated coved ceiling with
rooflight. Adjoining room, in similar style, has 3-bay
reticulated ceiling with roundels.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: outside, cast-iron spiked railing on
plinth. Retaining wall with string course, chamfered coping
and pilaster buttresses, topped with a railing at the side of
the hotel. Approach ramp, of similar design, is carried on 10
round arches.
