Orthopaedic hospital. 1913, with mid and late C20 alterations.
By AW Kenyon. Coursed squared stone with hipped pantile roofs.
2 large ridge, side wall and rear wall coped stacks.
Neo-Georgian style.
EXTERIOR: moulded plinth, string course, sillband and moulded
eaves. Central block flanked by wings in 2 steps. At either
end, a pavilion at right angles. Beyond, at either end, V-plan
loggias. Central block, 3 storey plus attics; 5 window range.
20-pane sashes with cornices and above, 12 pane sashes. Above
again, box dormers with 16 pane sashes. Central pedimented
doorcase flanked by two 20 pane sashes with keystones.
Returns have 2 ground floor windows and 2 dormers, with single
windows to intermediate floors. At the rear, a single storey
kitchen, 6 x 6 windows, with 3 ridge stacks. 2 storey wings
have three 20 pane sashes on each floor. Slightly projecting
outer wings, single storey plus attics, have 5 French windows,
the central one corniced, and 5 box dormers. Pavilions have
arcades of paired Doric columns covering 3 C20 windows flanked
by single French windows. At the rear, five 20-pane sashes.
Beyond, at either end, a mid C20 covered corridor to a pair of
loggias arranged in V-formation, with Doric colonnades. The
openings of the right loggia have mid C20 infill panels and
glazing.
INTERIOR has pilastered entrance hall with coved panelled
ceiling. At the rear, a 3-bay Doric arcade of marbled wooden
piers with 3 fanlights above. Facing the entrance, a shell
headed niche. Large reeded stone fireplace. 4 high relief
panels of symbolic figures.
