Crucible steel works, now garage, offices and workshops.
c1890, with late C20 alterations. Brick with ashlar dressings
and gabled and hipped slate roofs.
EXTERIOR: plinth, wooden gutter and brackets. 2 storeys; 10
window range. Buildings grouped around polygonal yard.
Main range, to Princess Street, has to left a workshop block
with canted corner. Tall round-arched cart entrance infilled
in lower part with round-arched glazing, flanked by 2 large
round-arched glazing bar windows. Above the right window, a
flat-headed 3-light casement.
Office range, to right, has 2 truncated gable and ridge
stacks. Triple plain sash to left, flanked to right by double
and single plain sashes. Beyond, 2 widely spaced single plain
sashes. Below, central late C20 door and overlight, flanked by
large shop windows with toplights, all with rendered and
painted surround. To left, a cart entrance with wooden lintel
and double board door. To right, 2 reglazed windows.
Left return, to East Coast Road, has to left the crucible shop
with an 8-flue crucible stack in the left gable and a similar
truncated stack in the right gable. 3 large casements, 2 of
them boarded. To right, late C20 entrance and gateway.
INTERIOR not inspected.
This building is an example of the numerous small crucible
steel works whose output complemented the bulk steel
production of the major firms.
