CAMDEN

TQ2684SE ALEXANDRA ROAD
798-1/61/41 Primrose Hill Tunnels (Western
14/05/74 Entrance)

II

Pair of railway tunnel portals at the western end of Primrose
Hill Tunnels. c1837. By WH Budden. For the London & Birmingham
Railway; Engineer, Robert Stephenson. Stock brick and stone
with stone dressings. 2 round-arched tunnel mouths with
splayed and coved reveals of rusticated voussoirs and
keystones crowned by a heavy modillion cornice, linking to
massive stone flanking piers on vermiculated stone pedestals.
On south side, curved flanking screen wall to tunnel with
piers having stone caps; north flanking screen wall replaced
by later tunnel.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the 1837, 1000m long tunnel was considered a
triumph of engineering being London's first railway tunnel;
the rugged design was said to be intended to give confidence
to the new breed of railway passenger. For eastern entrances
see Primrose Hill Tunnels (Eastern Entrance), Primrose Hill
Road (qv).
