Tunnel portal. 1847. By Frederick Swanwick. For the Midland
Railway Co. Ashlar and coursed squared stone. Semicircular
archway with double roll moulding, flanked by slightly
projecting rusticated pylons, topped with a roll moulded
cornice and blocking. To right, a short curved retaining wall
with slab coping and square end pier with roll moulded cornice
and flat cap.
An early example of monumental railway architecture.
