House, now public house. c1800, with late C19 and late C20
alterations. Probably for John Younge. Brick with whitewashed
stucco front, ashlar dressings and hipped slate roof with 2
coped brick side wall stacks. EXTERIOR: plinth, first floor
band and sillband, dentilled eaves and blocking course. 2
storeys; 3 x 4 windows. Slightly projecting central bay with
dentilled pediment and plain sash with cornice on brackets.
Beyond, on either side, a plain sash with incised lintel and
keystone. Central square late C19 porch with reset ashlar
doorcase with Doric columns and open pediment on scroll
brackets, containing an oval light with lattice glazing bars.
Late C20 double doors. Beyond, on either side, a canted wooden
bay window with fixed light, linked to the porch by a wooden
cross casement set at an angle. Right return has three 12-pane
sashes and to right, a reglazed and reduced window. Below, to
left, three 12-pane sashes, then a late C20 fire door. All
these openings have brick flat arches. INTERIOR has porch
screen with triple round-headed window, c1900. Entrance hall
has dentilled cornice and moulded round arch into room to
right. Stair well has an enriched dentilled cornice, and
retains the upper flight of a cantilever stone staircase. Main
ground floor rooms are joined by large late C20 openings.
John Younge operated a rolling mill on an adjoining site
c1788. Sheaf House was converted to a pleasure ground and
hotel, late C19.
