Capitol Bingo and Social Club
II
Cinema, now social club. 1936-37. By Reginald Cooper. Red
brick and reconstituted stone, painted. Roofs not visible
behind coped parapet.
Entrance front, 2 storeys, has a cylindrical central
projection with 3 renewed doors under a curving canopy. Above,
a projecting central fin flanked by steel framed strip windows
with ribbed heads, above, 3 horizontal ribs. To left, a
rounded corner stair enclosure, with a steel framed first
floor window. Blank right return has 2 prominent string
courses.
INTERIOR has a largely original entrance hall with coved
ceiling and concealed lighting. Semicircular central paybox
and square mushroom column. To left, stairs to balcony, and at
the rear, 2 renewed double doors. Auditorium retains most of
its original features. Square proscenium with a roll moulded
surround projecting forwards. Convex curved flanking walls
with horizontal ribs and triple vertical striplights. Renewed
double doors below. Auditorium ceiling has convex cornice and
a crosswise slotted ventilator towards the front. In front of
these, a deep cove and a ribbed ventilator. Over the balcony,
a coved ceiling with 2 ribbed ventilators. Balcony has moulded
front and to right, a rounded projecting box. To left, a
staircase.
