44-52 Commercial Street, E1, LB Tower Hamlets.
Warehouse, c1868. Architect Unknown. Yellow brick with extensive moulded stone dressings. Twenty bay faĆade of four storeys, including four loading bays. Two bay return to Wentworth Street. Ground floor consists of a regular arcade with arched openings resting on champfered square capitals. First and second floors have rectangular window openings with keystones and gauged window arches set within hood moulds; third floor has arched windows with keystones. Continuous plat bands at second and third floor levels. Heavy moulded cornice to parapet. Cast iron cranes with circle enriched spandrels survive in situ to the northernmost two loading bays. Original sash windows largely survive in situ. Interior retains cast iron columns.
A good and little altered example of mid-Victorian commercial premises, dating from the first decade of this new street. The first occupants are recorded in the directories for 1869.
