Row of 3 shops, possibly purpose-built with dwellings over.
Late C15. Timber-framed with plain tiled roof. 3-bay plan with
gable to left, and long range to right.
3 storeys. 5-window range. Ground floor entirely divided into
3 original shop units (restored C19), each with paired
4-centred arched windows and doorway. Interlace frieze over
each doorway. In the long range, the 2 units are separated by
a wide arch giving access to the rear. Jettied upper storey
has moulded bressumer and is framed in close studding with
middle rail. Moulded bressumer to jettied second storey framed
in square panelling with curved arched braces.
At first floor, the principal bays marked by wider posts with
superimposed shafts and 4 canted oriel windows flanked by
3-light casements projecting on brackets. 3-light casement
window in first floor of gable, with 4-light casements above,
all projecting on brackets. Interlace decoration on tie-beam
of gable, and cusped panelling on corner post carrying dragon
beam.
Return elevation to Fish Street has framing divided into 2
principal bays by arched braced central post. Inserted door
and casement windows to ground floor, and casements projecting
on brackets above.
A remarkably complete and significant surviving example of a
late medieval town house, with evidence for original shop
units.
