Former Palatine Bank, now cafe bar. 1909, by Briggs,
Wolstenholme and Thornley; altered. Portland stone, slate
roof. Rectangular plan incorporating circular towers at the
east and west corners. Norman style. Four storeys with
basement and attic, five bays plus circular corners, symmetrical;
ground floor treated as plinth with bracketed cornice, giant
round-headed arcade to the next three floors, in Norman style with
with semi-columns which have scallop caps and much dog-tooth
and nail-head enrichment to the arches; circular corner towers
with massive 3-bay open arcading to ground floor, machicolated
friezes, and conical roofs. Main facade has central
round-headed doorway and round-headed windows at ground floor,
all in Norman style, coupled windows to 1st and 2nd floors
with Norman shafts, and Diocletian windows in the heads of the
arches. Corner towers have round-headed Norman-style windows
to 1st and 2nd floors, small paired windows to 3rd floor. Tall
chimneys with machicolated caps. Four-bay left return side (to
Brown Street) slightly simpler, with colonnade instead of
arcade. Interior not inspected.
