Board school. Circa 1905, for Bristol School Board; possibly by Latrobe and Weston. Rustic red sandstone rubble with limestone dressings. Clay plain tile roofs with stone coped gable ends and ventilators on ridges with cupolas over.
PLAN: Two separate blocks, former boys' school to NW and former girls' school to SE, each with a central hall and a range of three attached classrooms either side; a detached cookery classroom to the south and a school house to the NE; the playground enclosed by railings.
EXTERIOR: The two main blocks each have a large central hall with a cupola on the ridge and gable ends with large round arch windows with keyblocks, rusticated quoins and a frieze above inscribed Bristol School Board with volutes at either end and a shaft above rising to a cornice finial at the apex; flanking either side are three lower single-storey classrooms, their gables with large 4-light windows with rusticated quoins and pedimental features over the raised centre lights with a shaft above rising to a cornice finial at the apex of the gable; the six classrooms of each block have ridge ventilators with cupolas over and there is a similar cupola over the porch at the end of the hall; doorways to the hall have segmental overlights with floating pediments above. Detached cookery classroom to south with steeply pitched hipped roof front range with projecting bay at the end with broaches and inscription above. Tall 3-bay school house on NE side with projecting gabled bays to left and right, 2-light windows and central entrance. The playgrounds surrounding the school are enclosed by railings on a low plinth with piers at intervals and gateways, two pedestrian gateways with segmental arches with volutes and scrolls above.
