EAST GRINSTEAD
CANSIRON LANE (east side),
Hartfield
Grove Farm

II

House, formerly farmhouse. C16 or earlier 2-bay building extended by one bay to east c1800. Timber-framed, mainly clad in weatherboarding on sandstone plinth but east bay has red brick ground floor in Flemish bond with some grey headers and tiled first floor. Half-hipped tiled roof with one off central brick chimneystack.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; irregular fenestration of C19 and C20 casements, some with leaded lights. North front has C18 plank door on pintle hinges. West side has gabled porch.
INTERIOR: exposed frame including curved tension braces to first floor. An inspection of the roof was not possible but this is probably of queen-post type. Ground floor has open fireplace with wooden bressumer and two spice alcoves possibly replacing earlier smoke bay. Late C18 winder staircase. First floor has old floorboards and central room has plank cupboard at side of chimneystack and open fireplace, now with C19 cast-iron firegrate.
