Formerly known as: No 8 (Officers' Quarters House) DURNFORD
STREET Stonehouse, R M Barracks.
Detached house, now part of Marines barracks. 1850-60.
Stuccoed walls; dry slate roof behind coped parapet
overmoulded cornice which continues as string under coped
gable to front; tall brick lateral stack on left; hip-roofed
wing at rear. Double-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 2:1-window-range front with gable over
left-hand bays and slightly-projecting entrance bay to right.
Segmental arches over sashes with glazing bars; round arch to
small gable window and round-arched window above entrance.
Round-arched doorway with large fanlight above glazed door
with margin lights.
INTERIOR: not inspected but likely to be of interest.
HISTORY: built for the surgeon at a time when the Longroom
(qv) was in use as the barracks hospital, and a pair with the
Assistant Surgeon's House, now Emma's Cottage (qv). Part of an
important and complete barracks complex.
