Terraced house. 1896. By Charles Fitzroy Doll, the Bedford
Estate Surveyor, on the site of what was probably an
outbuilding to No.38 (qv). Internal alterations 1899 and
1930s. Brick with stucco ground floor quoins, cornices and
dressings. Slated mansard roof with slab end stacks and 3
segmental pedimented dormers.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys, attics and basement. 4 windows. Arcaded
ground floor on short paired granite columns with entasis.
Round-arched entrance to right with projecting semicircular
hood on similar columns, double doors and fanlight; approached
by steps. Sashes have glazing bars to top lights only; ground
floor architraved and paired; upper floors grouped 3:1. 1st
floor architraved with continuous cast-iron balcony on large
brackets and heads of deep entablatures formed by a continuous
entablature slightly breaking forward. 2nd floor has eared
architraves, keystones and continuous sill band. Cornice at
3rd floor level. 3rd floor with stuccoed flat arches and
keystones and continuous sill band. Projecting modillion
cornice and brick blocking course.
INTERIOR not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached
cast-iron area railings of scalloped shape with scroll
patterned standards with finials.
