Circa 1900 large L-shaped house in Art Nouveau fashion. Red brick ground floor
with stone dressings. Roughcast above with half-timbered gable ends. Fairly high
pitched tiled roof with dormers. Two storeys and attic, irregular. Five bays
on the garden front. Stone mullioned and transomed windows in varying shapes.
Art Nouveau leaded glazing, some coloured. Projecting ground floor corner bays,
and some small 1st floor oriels. Back hall with glazed tiles in plant forms.
Tall, red brick entrance tower with battlemented parapet and pyramidal roof.
Listed partly because it was the residence of Marie Stopes the celebrated palaeo-botanist
and advocate of family planning. She also earned local gratitude by purchasing
the Golden Valley and giving it to the local community as perpetual open space.
