Grain kiln with stable to rear of No 39
(Formerly listed as Corn-drying Kiln south east of No 39)
GV
II*
Grain kiln with stable. c1700. Coursed gritstone, stone slate roof. 1-storey with partial basement, 3 bays. Large quoins; chamfered, quoined opening. Each side has doorway (now window) on uphill side of a row of blocked slit vents set beneath 2 small windows. Top-end gable has broad cart entrance with rebated jambs and massive lintel. Other gable with small basement door beneath blocked doorway and slit; square owl-hole. Interior: basement door leads, via low passage with niches, to a fire-chamber over which an arch supports a grill formed by slats of stone notched into stone joists; kiln tiles removed. Rooms above are linked by a chamfered, square-headed doorway. Original king-post trusses, twin purlins and ridge. Probably used for drying oats as well as corn. An extremely well-preserved example of a rear building type.
