Country house. Mid C17 and c.1812. Brick and stucco. Hipped
and gabled slate and plain tile roofs. Chamfered rendered
plinth. 2 side wall and single gable stacks. 2 and 3 storeys, 2
plus 3 bays. L-plan. Front windows are glazing bar sashes,
those to second floor having segmental heads. Rear fenestration
mostly casements. East front has to left, service wing, 2 bays,
with door flanked by single sashes. Above, to left, 2 sashes.
House has central Classical doorcase with cornice, hood and
geometrical overlight. Panelled door. Flanked by single sashes.
Above, 3 sashes. Above again, 3 smaller sashes. Rear elevation
has off-centre rear wing. To left, canted slated C19 bay window
with 3 casements. Rear wing has 3 C20 casements. Service wing,
to right again, has 2 casements. Above, sash flanked by 2
casements, those to its right with metal frames. Rear wing has,
above again, a Yorkshire sash to left. This building
incorporates part of the remains of the house of Dr. Robert
Thoroton, historian of Nottinghamshire.
