Pine substantial early to mid C18 house built for 2 merchant families. 4 storey
symmetrical front of 5 bays. Red brick with angle flute stone ionic pilasters,
carved caps 3 storeys high, supporting stone entablature with curved frieze,
the cornice broken off, the line of pilasters continued as piers through 3rd
floor and framing panelled, parapet with moulded stone string. Windows have fluted
stone keyblocks. Central 1st floor window has stone architrave and entablature,
central and floor window has stone architrave and segmental head with keyblock.
All windows have stone sills.
Arched central doorway in doorcase of fluted Ionic pilasters and entablature
with curved frieze and pediment, and mask keystone. Inner 6 panel door with
arched radiating fanlight approached by flight of steps and with pair of wrot
iron scroll pattern gates, to outer doorway. The central door flanked by modern
shops. The entrance gives access to central passage leading to rear, doors to
each side give on to very fine staircases leading up to 1st floor on each side
of house - open string with shaped brackets corkscrew and turned balusters 3
per tread, moulded and swept handrail, fluted newel posts, panelled dado to wall
divided by fluted pilasters. Similar but smaller secondary staircases give access
to 3rd floor. Though the house has been restored with conversion to flats on
upper floors a number of rooms retain dado and fielded panelling, both to front
and rear.
