Pair of mausolea, c.1860 by E B Lamb, for Fitzroy Somerset family. Limestone and
banded red brick, fishscale and plain tile roofs. Each is rectangular on plan,
with offset buttresses in stone at the angles. Slightly splayed roofs, with stone
copings that to west with fishscale tiles throughout, that to east with plain
tiles to the entrance canopy. That to east surmounted by cross at apex and over
canopy, bolts missing on that to west. Simple chamfered entrance with vertically
boarded door and ornate iron work hinges and door furniture. Moulded timber
bargeboards to canopy. Paired lancets to rear, single lancets to side, glazing
missing, some staybars also missing. Inside single chest tomb. That to east with
plaque to Amy, wife to Henry Charles Fitzroy Somerset, died 26 June 1889. That to
west has three illegible plaques to Somerset family, and wall tablets with texts.
South face carries partly mutilated inscription to Mary Caroline Somerset, only
and beloved daughter of Col Poulett? MP to the County of Monmouth and Barbara his
wife and second daughter of the Lord Char [ ] son of Henry V, Duke of Beaufort
KG born November 29 1852, died Gibraltar December 30, 1862.
