Marylea and No. 3 The Green
GV II
2 cottages, once 3 cottages, probably the original church house. C16 with C17
improvements, subdivided, extended and partly rebuilt in early C18, C19
extensions. Plastered cob on rubble footings; stone rubble or cob stacks topped
with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof, red interlocking tile roof to C19 extension.
Long building facing south with No. 3 The Green at left (west) end and Marylea in
centre and right (east) end. Latter occupying 2 former cottages. Cottages
derived from original 3-room-through-passage plan house with service room at
left (west) end. The former service room with projecting end stack, through
passage and hall with axial stack backing onto passage are now No. 3 The Green.
Marylea occupies former inner room and early C18 1-room extension with axial stack
serving back-to-back fireplaces between. To rear of Marylea is C19 service
extension with rear lateral stack. 2 storeys.
Irregular 5-window front of various C19 and C20 casements most with glazing bars.
The central 3 first floor windows include rectangular panes of leaded glass.
Passage door towards left end (to No. 3 The Green) has probably C17 doorframe with
chamfered frame and contains C19 plank door. Roughly central door (to Marylea) at
right end. C19 and C20 service outshots to rear and behind Marylea is 2-storey
service block with tile monopitch roof and gabled dormers.
Interior shows mostly late C17 - early C18 features. Crossbeams, where exposed,
are roughly chamfered and fireplace lintels are plainly finished. Both former
hall and service room stacks are cob and all fireplaces have side ovens although
some are now blocked. Roof of A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars and
X-apexes can be seen in No. 3 The Green. Roof inaccessible in Marylea but feet of
principals suggest similar trusses here. Evidence of the C16 origins show in No.
3 The Green. Here rear passage door has oak elliptical-headed frame and roof
includes remains of a side-pegged jointed cruck truss. Other early features may
be hidden.
