Farmbuildings comprising barn, stables and linhays. C17 with C19 modernisations.
Cob on rubble footings; corrugated iron, corrugated asbestos and slate roofs.
Continuous range of farmbuildings around northern side of farmyard to rear of
Chaffcombe Farmhouse (q.v.). At left end and facing east is a barn, linhays in
centre facing south and at right end is the stables facing south-west.
Barn has gable-ended roof of corrugated iron. At left end are full height
opposing doorways to threshing floor. The rear door has C17 oak frame with
chamfered surround. At right end of front is a small plank door and high in
centre is narrow ventilator. Interior is plastered with replacement C19 3-bay
roof of king post trusses. Barn probably originally extended 2 bays further to
left (south).
Linhays are set at right angles to barn. There are 2 sections, both Alcock's Type
T1. The larger 8-bay section to left has a slate roof and 4-bay section to right
has a corrugated iron roof and is set on a slightly different axis. They are
separated by a full height cob partition. Left section has replacement C19 roof
of king post trusses and right section has original C17 roof of A-frame trusses
with pegged lap-jointed collars.
Stables have corrugated asbestos roof. It has wide central doorway flanked by C20
iron-framed fixed pane windows with glazing bars to ground floor. Front is
somewhat patched with C20 concrete blocks but first floor appears always to have
blind. Roof is gable-ended to left and half-hipped to right. First floor loading
bay in right end wall. Inside there are plain soffit-chamfered beams to ground
floor and bay roof of C17 A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars.
To rear the cob wall following round the 3 changes in angle of the linhays and
stables is completely blind and apparently continuous. It lines the approach to
Chaffcombe Farmhouse (q.v.).
