4/60 Lodge Farmhouse and integral barn
-
- II
Farmhouse with integral barn, probably C17, with C18 and C19 additions to the
house at the left end. Coursed sandstone rubble with large quoins (additions
of watershot coursed sandstone, and random rubble), roofs on 3 slightly
different levels, of slate and stone slate with 3 chimneys. Original
building 4 bays, with domestic accommodation only in 1st bay which had end
baffle-entry, is now 2 low storeys and has modern lean-to porch (continued
to left) covering altered original doorway or window, square window at 1st
floor; 3-bay barn continued to right has small breathers on 2 levels, blocked
opposed wagon entrances to the centre, and at right end a doorway with very
large jambstones and lintel, and straight dripstone above. Rear wall has
opposed similar doorway, and moulded double corbels to former canopy of
wagon entrance. Later additions to left are each double pile, one bay,
2 higher storeys with roofs of different pitch, and the first of them
partly embraces the original house. Interior: mostly altered, apparently
in C18, but original rear doorway to domestic part survives (now covered
outside by later kitchen extension). Barn has original collar rafter roof
trusses, the tie-beams with tongue-stopped chamfer; blocked doorway to
housepart; cow stalls aligned across the end bay facing inwards include at
least 2 posts with tongue-stopped chamfer. Internal renovation of house in
progress at time of survey. Listed as now rare example of very simple type
of laithe house.
