Description

SPELDHURST
12/564 Pair of Cripps headstones
approx 12m south west of the
tower of the Church of St Mary
the Virgin
GV II

Pair of headstones. C18 and 1821 in memory of members of the Cripps family.
Both are upright sandstone slabs. The more southerly one stands approx 450mm
high and has a double curvilinear-shaped head, each carved with cartouches
containing symbols (possibly of trade). Fielded panel below is inscribed with
Roman serif upper and lower case lettering and records the death of William
Cripps but the date of his death is buried. It is probably late C18. The
other stands approx 1.6m high and its shaped head is carved with a good (if
somewhat rustic) representation of Judgement Day with scrolls around the shape
of the head. Inscription begins in Gothic lettering and continues in Roman
serif upper and lower case lettering. It records the death of Richard Cripps
in 1821.
