House. C18 probably for Richard Rigby of probably earlier origin with C19 and
C20 alterations and additions. Front range of gault brick, red plain tiled
roof, central gault brick chimney stack. 2 storeys, attics and basements.
Gabled returns with end pilasters. Band and 2 central pilasters to left return.
Parapet. 5 tall window range with gauged brick arches, the central upper and
lower windows blocked. Mainly 2 light tall casements with glazing bars,
vertically sliding sashes with panels under to first floor right. A pair of
cast iron balconies to first floor. Shutters to ground floor windows. There
are 3 lower attached rear ranges facing The Green, that to rear of front range
with parapet, band and pilasters, 2 first floor 2 light small paned casements
with segmental heads, frieze and flat canopy to door surround. Red brick
chimney stacks and dormer windows to the other ranges. Interior features to C18
front ranges include, 6 panelled doors, moulded surrounds with paterae, window
shutters, moulded dados and wainscots. Moulded cornices. Stick balusters to
staircase, wreathed handrail, mouldings to open string. Moulded arch with
pilasters to Hall. Marble fire surround, fluted with paterae. Several C18 and
C19 cast iron fire surrounds and grates, one especially fine with classical
figures standing on fluted columns and figures within swags. Small lead flower
sink with draining board to rear landing. Butler's pantry with original shelves
and cupboards, hob grate. Dairy with original leaded light window and shelves.
Delft tiles in cupboard. Original slatted doors, walls and floors to cellar,
brick wine store. Second cellar range part vaulted, original floors and steps.
Also in the cellar/basement area are C17/C18 metal 3 light windows, a brick
fireplace with iron grate and pot hook and a stone sink. A grotto room in the
basement of the front range lined with shells, flints, slag and glass opens into
the rear garden. q.v. 3/227.
