Description

SS 90 NW THORVERTON
5/107 Perry Farmhouse
-
II
Farmhouse. Circa early C16 origins, remodelled in the circa late C16/early C17.
Whitewashed and rendered, probably cob and stone, left end wall rebuilt in brick;
thatched roof with plain ridge, hipped at left end, adjoining barn at right end;
axial stack with rendered shaft, left end stack with brick shaft.
Plan and Development Access to interior unobtainable at time of survey (1986) but
probably a 3 room and through passage arrangement of late medieval origins, lower end
to the right. The hall was probably floored late C16/early C17 and the hall stack
added backing on to the through passage. Rear left wing at right angles to the inner
room is probably a later addition.
Exterior 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front, the eaves thatch eyebrowed over the
first floor windows. Front door to through passage to right of centre; 2 and 3-light
C19 and C20 casements with glazing bars.
Interior Not inspected at time of survey (1986) but said to have smoke-blackened roof
timbers complete with rafters and thatch and circa late C16/early C17 carpentry on
the ground floor.
Possibly the house of William atte Purie (1330).
The Sites and Monuments Register (County Hall) states that a full survey record by
Charles Hulland is deposited in the west Country Studies Library.
