GV II
House extended to include shops and flat. Dated 'RSM 1688',
probably altered C18 and with C19 alterations. Coursed limestone,
graduated stone slate roof; Welsh slate to 44. 2 storeys,
irregular H-shaped plan of various builds. Front: C17 features
to recessed centre (42) include: chamfered plinth; moulded ashlar
surround to cross-boarded door on left of 3-light ovolo-moulded,
mullioned window having casements with horizontal glazing bars;
continuous dripmould. Matching lst-floor window in differing
masonry with quoins to left and single-light ovolo-moulded window
beyond. Small brick ridge stack to right of door; hipped end to
right has 2 brick stacks at eaves. Probably C18 gabled wing to
front right (40) has irregular quoins and altered early wing to
front with part-glazed door flanked by shop windows with stone
cills, channelled wooden pilasters, fascia and cornice; 3-light
mullioned window to 1st floor as others; ashlar gable copings
with finial. Mid C19 gabled wing to left (44) has segmentally-
arched door to right of plain shop window; transomed 2-light
casement above has arch with keystone; illegible date plaque and
ashlar gable copings with finial. Rear: 42 has blocked window and
doorway beneath dripmould all within later lean-to. Rear wing
with mullioned window as front, 2 others to main range. Interior:
40 has chamfered spine beam within shop. Doorway through to 42
which has winder stair and 2 rooms with ovolo-moulded transverse
beams, the left-hand room with flag floor and inglenook fireplace
with stone heck and moulded wooden bressumer. 1st floor: Cl7
plank and muntin room partitions now wallpapered. Loft space said
to retain floorboards of former attic storey. 44 is interlocked
with 40 and 42 and is included for group value only.
